Show the exclusive rights to your design

As of 1 May 2025, it is possible to use the new design registration symbol Ⓓ (the letter D in a circle) to indicate that a design is registered and protected under EU design legislation. The symbol functions in a similar way as the ®️ symbol does for trademarks, signalling that the design is legally protected and that unauthorised copying or use may have legal consequences. Thus, the new symbol makes it easy for companies and designers to show that their design is protected and that they hold the exclusive rights to it.

How to use the symbol

Designers and companies are free to use the Ⓓ symbol on products, packaging, marketing materials, and digital platforms to show that their design is registered. However, the symbol may only be used if the rights to a design are registered – misuse of the symbol can have legal consequences. It is therefore important to register a design before using the symbol.

Benefits of registering a design

Registering your design offers a range of advantages:

  • Legal protection: You gain the exclusive right to use the design and can prevent others from copying it. Others must obtain your permission to produce, sell, or use your design.
  • Enhanced marketing: The Ⓓ symbol clearly shows that your design is protected, which can increase trust among customers and business partners.
  • Competitive advantage: A registered design can be a valuable intellectual property asset that strengthens your company’s market position. It can increase business value and be licensed, sold, or used as collateral, for example in connection with negotiations or potential investors.
  • Enforcement opportunities: It is easier to take legal action against infringers if your design is officially registered.
  • Protection across all EU countries: A registered EU design provides protection in all EU member states, allowing you to safeguard your rights effectively across borders.
  • Cost-effective and fast exclusive rights: Applying for a registered EU design is affordable, and registration can be obtained within a few weeks. With a single application, you can protect up to 50 designs, and there is no longer a requirement for the designs to be related.

We recommend registering your design(s) to ensure the best possible protection. At the same time, the symbol signals to the outside world that you consider your designs to be your property and intend to defend them against infringement. With a registered design, it is easier to act against copies and protect the foundation of your business.
